Committee for the Follow-Up on Women’s Issues (CFUWI)

Historical Background

The Committee for the Follow-Up on Women’s Issues was established on June 12th, 1996 according to decree number, 71/AD.
The Committee established units in all Lebanese regions: Beirut, Mount-Lebanon, North Lebanon, South Lebanon and the Bekaa Area.

Our Mission

• To accomplish gender equality

• To eliminate all forms of discrimination against women

• To empower women and maintain an effective women’s participation in all levels of social, economic and political aspects of life

• To upgrade awareness concerning the concept of Gender and to integrate gender mainstreaming within the national policies and in political, cultural, economic and social areas

• To promote women’s participation in the decision making process and implement it at all levels

• To encourage intercommunication among women on the local, regional and international levels

Our Accomplishments

• Development of the first National strategy for Lebanese women in collaboration with the National Commission for Lebanese Women (1997)

• Launching national campaign to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in the Lebanese Laws (1999)

• Conducting first, second, third and fourth shadow reports on the progress made in the implementation of the convention on the eliminating of all forms of discrimination against women- CEDAW (1999-2005-2008-2014)

• Conducting first, second and third Lebanese document on eliminating all forms of discrimination against women (1999- 2005-2014)

• Spreading knowledge and awareness of these documents in all Lebanese regions

• Spreading knowledge about Gender in all Lebanese regions

• Implementing study and training sessions on “building up women’s capacities to face family violence” (2006)

• Implementing study and training sessions on “raise awareness among women on Aids disease, risks and ways to deal with” (2006)

• Conducting five booklets on “women’s rights to give her nationality to children and husband”, “abolishment of article 562 of penal code-honor crime”, “amendment of nationality law”, “women’s right in marriage and divorce in Islam” and “custody right till the age of 18” (2007)

• Implementing study and training sessions on “civic education in Lebanon- knowledge and behaviors” with the Center for Educational Research and Development (2008)

• Monitoring "discrimination in reading books, national and civil education” in primary school (2006), middle stage (2008), and in high school and kindergartens (2010)

• Implementing training sessions on gender discrimination in textbooks for school principals and teachers of the primary and middle stage in the public sector and for trainers of the Center for Educational Research and Development (2007-2009)
